2G Mobile Networks: GSM and HSCSD is a comprehensive reference for Telecommunication engineers. Marketing and sales professionals would find this an extremely useful source since the book cuts out the jargon and complicated mathematics. Written by practicing telecom engineers with a vast experience in mobile telecommunication technologies, the book presents 2G technologies in a simple and effective manner from three view points: architecture and protocols, procedures, and services. Readers will gain athorough and quick understanding of GSM networks-from air interface to core network and the available services. The book provides an exhaustive coverage of protocol architecture and procedures, including radio resource and mobility management, as well as call handling. It begins by laying down the fundamentals of GSM technology ? cellular concepts, network and protocol architecture of GSM. This is followed by a discussion of GSM air interface that covers important topics including GSM frame hierarchy, burst structure, physical and logical channels. The discussion then moves onto the three logical parts of any basic wireless architecture-Mobile Station, Access and Core Networks. Important procedures of access and core networks are discussed next. The book ends with discussions of service aspects of GSM networks. These include voice transfer, SMS, cell broadcast service, location services and finally circuit switched data, and the more advanced high-speed circuit switched data. Each of the topics presented are well supplemented with illustrations to facilitate comprehension of the matter Key Features Comprehensive overview of GSM networks Discussion of protocol architecture and procedures Coverage of radio resource and mobility management, and call handling Service aspects of GSM networks About The Author Sumit Kasera is Senior Technical Leader at Flextronics Software Systems (formerly Hughes Software Systems), India. He has a B. Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur, India and an M.S degree in Software Systems from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. His current area of interest is software development for GSM, GPRS and EDGE access network. Sumit is also experienced in software development for networking protocols like ATM, TCP/IP and 3G UMTS. He has been has an active participant in various technical forums like ITU-T, ATM Forum and 3GPP where he has presented papers and conducted seminars; and also participated in the review of 3GPP specifications.. Sumit is the author of two books ?ATM Networks: Concepts and Protocols and 3G Networks: Architecture, Protocols and Procedures. Nishit Narang is Senior Technical Leader at Flextronics Software Systems India. He has a B. Tech. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT, Delhi, India, and an M.S degree in Software Systems from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. Nishit's current areas of interest include software development for GSM, GPRS and 3G networks.
