This book examines South Asia's perceptions of the rapid and phenomenal rise of China as a formidable economic and military power in the region. Underscoring how India and its neighbours in South Asia are looking at China's rise from their respective vantage points, it shows that the varying perceptions comprise admiration, expectations, anxiety, and apprehension and in some cases, all of them put together. The different articles examine how China's dominance is manifest through its increasing weight in global affairs, explore the political, economic and socio-cultural constituencies that help crystallise this perception, and project how each country's relations with China are likely to be shaped by these constituencies. India views China's growing might with both appreciation and concern; for its South Asian neighbours, a rising China is generally seen as a source of economic support and a strategic balancer vis-xE0;-vis India; and Pakistan stands as a category apart because of the 'all weather' nature of its relations with China over the past several decades.
