Description
English Phonetics and Linguistics aims at the readers with the basic principles and concepts of the subject. Linguistics has, over the past few decades, grown into a multidimensional discipline interacting with such diverse areas of study as psychology, sociology, anthropology, palaeography, history, information science and so on. Much insight and knowledge about mens linguistic behaviour have been gained recently through this interaction. However, the fact remains that before all else, one must be equipped thoroughly with the fundamentals of the subject without which it would be futile and suppress to venture into the complexities of communicational behaviour of man. This book seeks to introduce to the students the general elements of the subject in a lucid and easily comprehensible style. Beginning with the general discussion about the nature of language and communication, organs of speech and growth of phonetics, it goes on to describe the basic building block of speech, phonemes and morphemes, their organization and into system of various levels, syntax and syntactical processes, form-classes and constructional patterns. As a section on historical comparative linguistics discusses the immensely interesting journey of a language through evolutionary stages, grouping of different languages into families on the basis of genetics affinities and changes that occur in a language over the years.
