  • Description

Anjuna : Profile of a Village in Goa converges on the most enchanting stretch of sun-kissed beaches in the newest State of the Indian Union. Harking back to remote times steeped in local legend, the book recounts gory feuds and petty foibles. It tells of temples and shrines, Portuguese missionaries and monuments and how the life of a simple rustic community, preoccupied with traditional arts and crafts, was repeatedly disturbed by bands of marauding horsemen and fierce battles raging around the historic fortress of Chapora. Recapturing also heroic exploits that merited prestigious titles and colorful crests, dwells on the grandeur of some very old manor houses that belong to a bygone era of opulence, ease and elegance. Yet it also depicts the lot of the depressed mundkar (landless tenent), his struggle in the face of challenge and it exults in his ultimate triumph as well as the change it brought into the old order. And coming to our times it tells of hippies and hucksters, who in their turn have changed the scene and place foremost on the international tourist map.
