Dehradun, the gateway and capital of Uttarakhand is situated in Doon Valley. It is endowed with rich mineral, forest resources, agriculture and climatic conditions. The city has acquired a cosmopolitan character due to a number of professional organizations and research institutes. Dehradun also has an added advantage of institutions which impart quality schooling to a large number of students. As a result of the existence of schools and higher research and training institutions, Dehradun has an extremely high rate of literacy which is among the highest in the entire country. All these factors have helped Dehradun to become a good centre for institutions of excellence. The book is an out come of the deliberations duringthe seminar held on the occasion of silver jubilee celebrations of the North West Regional centre of the Anthropological Survey of India The seminar was conducted as an effort to involve academicians from various fields in this city, as also ourselves, in a systematic understanding of the social and Bio-cultural realities of Dehradun city. The first session deliberated on papers pertaining to environmental and bio-cultural aspects of the city, whereas second session discussed socio- cultural scenario of the city. In all 12 papers have been included in the present book, covering topics as varied as environment issues, growth and nutrition, demo genetics, health, communal issues and industrial development.
