About The Authors Born in 1914, George B. Thomas, Jr. is an American professor of mathematics. His other works include Thomas' Calculus, Early Transcendentals, University Calculus, Single Variable With Vectors, and Probability And Statistics. He worked with publishers Addison-Wesley on Calculus And Analytical Geometry, and the first edition was published in 1952. This book is now in its twelfth edition and is used worldwide. He became involved in mathematics and science education in America’s primary and secondary schools from 1955, even coming to India on a grant from the Ford Foundation to train teachers of mathematics. Thomas graduated in 1936 from Washington State University with a B.A. and M.A. in mathematics and mathematics education respectively. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, New York, and was immediately hired by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Interestingly, he programmed the differential analyser to calculate firing tables for the United States Navy during World War II. Thomas died in Foxdale Village, Pennsylvania, in 2006. Ross L.
