After earning a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Connecticut at Storrs in 1982, he took a position in the Visual Communications Research Department at AT&T Bell Labs (now Lucent Technologies) in Holmdel, New Jersey. Dr. Murdocca left Bell Labs to pursue a research faculty position as an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Rutgers University in 1989, doing research in optical computing, optical interconnects, computer architecture, and networking. With the support and involvement of other Computer Science faculty, and the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, he founded the Rutgers University Internet Institute (RUII) program with a charter of providing noncredit continuing education in information technology. The RUII program led to the Internet Institute USA (IIUSA) spinoff which is where Dr. Murdocca now works.
