The present volume encompasses the multi-faceted aspects of the anti-Partition and swadeshi upsurge resulting from Curzon’s decision to partition Bengal in 1905. The book has evolved out of a UGC-sponsored national seminar organised jointly by Victoria Memorial and Loreto College, Kolkata, held in the centenary year of this historic event. In the last one hundred years a vast mass of historical writings has been produced and the present thematically arranged book (divided into six sections) makes a significant addition to this existing historiography. Distinguished historians and scholars through their meticulously researched and deeply reflective articles raise crucial queries to identify the many hidden currents within the Swadeshi Movement. Author Biography
Tapati Sengupta is former Head of the Department of History, Loreto College. She is actively involved in Women’s Studies and is currently working on a biography of Sarala Debi Chaudhurani, a pioneer in the field of women’s movement in the early twentieth century India. She is a resource person of the Tagore-Gandhi Institute for Culture Studies and Service-Learning, Kolkata and the IPS-L faculty of Loreto College. She offers courses on Indian religions and different aspects of Indian History to visiting foreign students under the International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership. She is also an active member of the Institute of Historical Studies, Kolkata Shreela Roy teaches in the Department of History, Loreto College, Kolkata and is a former Head of the Department. She is President of the Tagore-Gandhi Institute for Culture Studies and Service-Learning, Kolkata; co-ordinator of the IPS-L faculty of Loreto College and an active member of the Shakespeare Society of Eastern India, Kolkata. She recently completed a UGC-sponsored Minor Research Project entitled, ‘An ethno-regional history of the Artisan class in Bengal - the Shankhari clan of Bishnupur-Bankura: a case study’.
