    The book offers an up-to-date overview of the function of the CD4 molecule in normal immune responses and in AIDS. This molecule has key roles in the development of T cells in the thymus and in the activation of T helper cells. It also serves as the cell surface receptor for the human immunodeficiency virus, and thus is a principal factor in determining which cell types are susceptible to HIV infection. The functions of the CD4 molecules are presented in the context of other recent studies that have elucidated the 3-dimensional structure of the molecule.
