This book examines debates surrounding education and social justice in policy, research and public discourse in India and the UK, and argues for a more nuanced understanding of globalisation and education in a changing world. The articles in the volume use a comparative and relational framework to study two countries, India and the UK, which have historical and contemporary linkages. The analysis focuses on the relationship between globalisation and the changing role of the state with regard to education as it negotiates between global opportunities and compulsions, national interests, and regional and local aspirations. Specific themes examined include race, caste and equity in education; the middle classes and education; educational concerns of children with disabilities; global movements and national policy; financing of higher education in relation to access and equity; and advocacy networks and the education of India's poor.
