Elements of Numerical Analysis is intended to serve as a textbook fortwo-unit (one-year) course in Numerical Analysis at undergraduate or postgraduate level. The topics in the book have been dealt with rigorously and are supported by ample number of solved examples. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter for practice. An attempt is made to present the subject in a simplified and systematic manner. In general, the treatment is self-contained; however, references are given wherever necessary after each chapter. The last chapter though does not form a part of the syllabus; it would prove to be useful to those engaged in research or in solving problems in applied fields. All calculations have been made on a simple (non-scientific) calculator and most of the intermediate steps are shown so that the students can follow the method easily and can also check their results. Author Biography
Radhey S. Gupta holds an MSc in Mathematics from University of Allahabad. He obtained his PhD. from Brunel University, England under the guidance of Professor J. Crank and continued to work there as Postdoctoral Research Fellow for two years after PhD. He was Reader/Professor/Head in the Dept. of Mathematics at University of Roorkee (now, IIT Roorkee) from 1976-97. He taught Numerical Analysis to engineering students as well as to MSc and MPhil students in the Department of Mathematics. Professor Gupta has guided five PhD research scholars and many MPhil/M Tech dissertations. After retirement, he worked as Professor/Principal at Priyadarshini College of Computer Sciences (U.P. Technical University) Noida, from 1997-2001 and later as Professor/Director at Trinity Institute of Higher Education (GGSIP University), New Delhi, from 2001- 06. He taught for one semester at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok (Thailand) and was Visiting Professor at University of Florence, Italy. His broad field of specialisation is Numerical Analysis with particular interest in Moving Boundary Problems and has published many research papers in the reputed international journals, on the topic.
