Author Biography
Dr. S.K. Sood is Professor and Dean, Life Sciences, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He obtained his M.Sc. (1974) awarded M.Phil. (1976) from Himachal Pradesh University and Ph.D. (1981) degree from Nagarjuna University, Guntur, specializing in Plant Systematics and Embryology. For his post-doctoral, he underwentspecialized training in Ethnobotany. He has had a brilliant academic career (triple gold medallist) followed by over 30 years of teaching and conducting research in Botany at postgraduate as well as research levels. Dr. Sood has guided about 30 M.Phil. and 15 Ph.D. students and published numerous research papers in various national and international journals of repute. He has attended and participated in many national and international seminars, workshops and conferences. He is also associated with many educational and research bodies in India and abroad. A prolific writer, his books 'Ethnobotany of Cold Desert Tribes of Lahoul-Spiti (N.W. Himalaya)' 2001; 'Ethnobotany of Rewalsar Himalaya' 2004; 'Ethnic Aphrodisiac Plants' 2005; 'Ethnic Indian Plants in Cure of Diabetes' 2005; 'Sacred and Magico-religious Plants of India' 2005; 'Ethnic Plants of India Used in Cancer Cure A Compendium' 2005; 'Orchidaceae and Mankind' 2005;'Honey Plants of the North-West Himalaya' 2006'; Edible Roots and Underground Stems of Ethnic India' 2006; 'Fibre and Fodder Resources of India' 2008; 'Root Drug Plants of Ethnic India' 2008; 'Ethnobotanical Studies on Trees, Shrubs and Climbers of Himalaya' 2009; 'Dye, Masticatory and Fumitory Resources of India' 2009; 'Flavouring and Fragrant Resources of India' 2010, were widely acclaimed. His current major interests are in the theory and practice of systematics, flora of North-West Himalaya, ethnic tribes and conservation research.Ms. Shefali Kaushal is a postgraduate from Himachal Pradesh University. She obtained her M.Phil. (2005) from Shimla, specialising in Ethnobotany. At present, she is pursuing her doctoral work in the department. Dr. T.N. Lakhanpal is presently Director, Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He is a Gold Medallist from Punjab University, Chandigarh and awarded Ph.D. from the University of Delhi. He has published more than 150 research papers. He has co-authored "Taxonomy of Indian Myxomycetes, Rural Energy Alternatives in the Hilly Areas and the Amanitaceae of India". Dr. Lakhanpal is very well known for his research contributions in India as well as abroad. Dr. Suresh Kumar is a UGC post-doctoral fellow working in the Himachal Pradesh University. His current major interests involve floristics, ethnobotany and management of biodiversity.
