Many old riverted bridges are replaced too soon due to a general lack of knowledge about the expected lifespan. More information on fatigue of these old bridges is therefore essential and may lead to animproved service life. This volume presents research carried out by the author to better understand and estimates the true load-carrying capacity of riveted steel bridges. It unveils extensive research and literature results on riveted bridges' fatigue life and shows how to take fatigue properly into account when deciding about the future service life of a riveted steel bridge. It deals with the expected fatigue life, level of stress ranges by traffic, effect of temperature and ageing, loading histories, crack detection, loose rivets, other degects, repair and strengthening, providing proper instructions and more. Author Biography
Bjorn Akesson (Sweden) has authored several books on bridge design, such as Plate Buckling in Bridges and other Structures (CRC Press/Balkema, 2007) and Understanding Bridge Collapses (CRC Press/Belkema, 2008).
