People in developing countries lived in relatively self-sufficient communities before the colonial rule by planted rice and other crops, fishes and hunted for other food. They have used the local resources and indigenous skills and also to some extent satisfied with available housing, clothing and other needs, which they have produced through village and cottage industries. The modes of production and life style were largely in harmony with the natural environment. About Author : Prof. C. Narrasimha Rao, presently heading the Department of Rural Development and the Centre for Scientific Socialism, Acharya Nagarjuna Univeristy, Andra Pradesh. He obtained his Post-Graduate degree in Economics from AndhraUniversity, Waltair. He received his Ph.D. in Political Economy from the Institute of Economics, KIEV. Prof. Rao has so far organised fourteen National Seminars. He edited and published six books and this would be the seventh volume. Prof. Rao has also published a good number of papers in various journals. Eight research degrees were awarded under his guidance. He traveled extensively most of the European Countires and gained first hand knowledge about these countries.
