How to Win Friends and Influence People was a path-breaking publication. It was one of the first bestsellers in the self-help genre. The first edition of the book came out in the 1930s during the Great Depression. In the book, Dale Carnegie shows readers how to get out of the mental monotony that long conditioning has put them in. It teaches them to be bold enough to try out new ideas and see situations from a new perspective. The book teaches readers how to convert people to one’s way of thinking, without making them feel manipulated. The book can help team leaders, sales persons, and managers acquire better skills at handling people. The book also teaches people how to get good jobs and how to make a success out of the job that they already have. Carnegie teaches readers how to present a different viewpoint to people without offending them, by respecting their viewpoint too.The book gives simple but effective tips on communication like remembering people’s names, being a good listener, and displaying a genuine interest in other people. During the 1930s, Dale Carnegie’s self-help courses became very popular. Leon Shimkin of Simon & Schuster persuaded Carnegie to allow the publishing house to bring in someone to take notes during his lectures, which were later to be published in book form. The book became a bestseller, and in 1981, a revised edition was released with updated language and new anecdotes. First published in the 1930s, this book contains advice and tips that are still relevant today.
