  • Description

India Since 1950 is a non-fiction book written by Christophe Jaffrelot. The book comprehensively covers every aspect of the nation, starting from its vibrant and dynamic culture and the diversity of its population, to the different reforms that have shaped its economy, and conflicts that continue to plague the nation. It tracks down the path of the India’s evolution from many angles - political, economic, diplomatic, social, and artistic. The book is divided into four parts. The first part talks about the Indian economy, and about how the world’s largest democracy works. The second part talks about the conflict in Kashmir, and how regionalism is widespread across the country. The third part is dedicated to the Indian people, and this section takes readers on a journey through the different communities across rural and urban India - including the Indian middle-class. The fourth part traces India’s cultural history and provides snippets of the golden age of the Indian media. Christophe Jaffrelot is a French political scientist. He is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (IEP) in Paris, and holds a doctorate in political science. Besides being a writer, he is a Senior Research Fellow at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). He writes extensively on South Asian politics and culture, and his popular books include The Hindu Nationalist Movement and Indian Politics, India’s Silent Revolution:The Rise of the Lower Castes in North India, Revisiting Nationalism: Theories and Processes, and A History of Pakistan and Its Origins.
