    The modern education policy in India is often criticised because it lacks relevance and has not ben able to constibute much to the national development wherea sthe education policy of ancient India was based on the highest respect for knowledge, individual and society. The Hidnu educational system continued in 'gurukulas' and 'ashramas' during medieval periods but a new system of Maktabs and Madrasahs also emerged which was patronised by rulers. About Author : Dr. Ram Shakal Pandey (b. 1934) received his elementary education at a village school in the district of Pratapgarh, Avadh, secondary education in Karachi (now in Pakistan) and Lucknow. He graduated from Agra University and received post-graduate education at Sagar University and Lucknow University. He was awarded Doctorate in education in 1961 by Lucknow University.
