Indian society xE2;x80;x94; having a checkered history of monarchy, feudalism, colonialism, and democracy xE2;x80;x94; has passed through a long evolutionary process. It is being interpreted in a variety of ways by different ideologies. The basic problem for social scientists is to find out the meaning, truth, and reality of Indian society. August Comte was the first sociologist to take up the task of defining society. Since then, gallonsof ink have been put onto paper in order to define and redefine Indian society. This present work analyzes Indian society in both scientific and humane perspectives. It elicits the views of some of the leading Indian sociologists xE2;x80;x94; D.D. Kosambi, Romila Thapar, Radhakamal Mukerjee, Ramkrishna Mukherjee, Yogendra Singh, Surajit Sinha, Ranajit Guha, etc. xE2;x80;x94; and a few Western sociologists xE2;x80;x94; Louis Dumont, McKim Marriott, David Hardiman xE2;x80;x94; who have done research in India and have developed perspectives on Indian society. The book includes perspectives that are historical, Indological/textual, structural-functional, Marxist, cultural, and civilizational. The book will prove useful for students, teachers, and researchers alike.
