A compilation of the latest facts and figures, ranging from the basic socio-economic and demographic indicators to development parameters, these books also provide brief profiles of the states covering their history, culture, cuisine, handicrafts, places of tourist interest as well as an account of their performance vis--vis other states Uttarakhand was a part of Uttar Pradesh till 2000, when it became the 27th state of the nation. Its economy has boomed after its creation and the state has overtaken other newly formed states. Livelihoods from the primary sector need to be raised through different economic activities such as horticulture and medicinal herbs that are suited to the climate and topography. The state has shown impressive growth in industry by attracting investment through tax incentives. The tourism sector has also been well developed to exploit the abundant natural beauty of the state. The districts that formed Uttarakhand have always been socially more advanced than those in Uttar Pradesh, and the state, therefore, does well by human development indicators. While the state is on the right track as far as attainment of development goals is concerned, it has a long way to go to catch up with its neighbour Himachal Pradesh and raise the standard of living for its people.
