In this book the author examines the various issues of International Law and the challenges that must be met by it. It is well known that the present system of International Law, inherited by the worldwide community of states is aproduct of the Western Christian civilization and was developed by and amongst the European states of states of European origin. The independence and active participation of Asian and African countries in international relations since the Second World War has broken open the exclusive club of Western Powers forming active community of states for nearly three centuries. These new states not only have completely different religious, social and cultural backgrounds but a majority of them are extremely poor and under-developed. In order to remain effective, International Law must change according to the sociological structure of the new international community. The author evaluates in this book the traditional law and the process of change that it is undergoing to become a common law of mankind. He examines various problem facing international law and suggests how it must be changed and modified to meet the challenges of tomorrow.About the Author R.P. Anand (1933 to 2011) was Professor Emeritus in the Centre of International Legal Studies. Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Professor Anand retired from the University in 1998 after being there for nearly 33 years as Professor and Head of the Division. Anand is well known scholar in International Law and widely recognized as a spokesman of the Third World views on the subject. As an elected member of the Instuit de Droit International Anand was the recipient of a number of awards and honors, visiting scholar for several institutes of higher learning around the world. He was a Lecturer at the Hague Academy of International Law, UGC National Lecturer in Law (India) and also served as Legal consultant to the UN Secretary General on Law of the Sea.
