The need for library classification is growing with the multifaceted, multidimensional and infinite growth of literature as well as the user’s requirement. Since the objective of library classification is to facilitate subject access by enabling the user to find out what works or documents the library has on a certain subject and where they are shelved, attempts have always been made to make the classification easier and accessible to users of all levels. Accordingly, many standard systems of library classification are in use today like DDC, CC, UDC, LC etc. The present book is an attempt to provide a detailed study of not only the fundamentals of library classification but also the latest developments that have been made in this area.Introducing the nature and purposes of library classification, the book discusses in detail the canons, principles and laws, which evaluate a scheme of classification. It makes an in-depth study of Isolates, Postulation, Approach, Chain Indexing, Analytico-Synthetic Scheme of Classification, Faceted Classification, Call Number and Citation Indexing.
