The second edition of Keiser's Local Area Networks has been updated extensively with the latest LANs technology. The book has been written with the purpose of providing the basic material for an introductory senior or first-year graduate course in the analysis and modeling of local area networks. The book will also serve as a working reference for practicing engineers dealing with local area network design and applications. The book is organized to give a clear and logical sequence of key LAN topics. Key Features: Many of the topics in the book have been updated or expanded, while half of the chapters are completely new (chapters 5, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12). Highlights of the changes include: an updated overview of LAN terminology and motivation, along with a discussion of the latest LAN standards in chapter 1; expanded discussion of the TCP/IP architecture in chapter 2; a simplified overview of communication concepts for LAN applications, along with an updated discussion of transmission media and a description of WDM in chapter 3; a simplified explanation of LAN access methods in chapter 4; detailed descriptions of basic, Fast, Gigabit, and 10-Gigabit Ethernet in the new chapter 5; and a concise discussion of legacy Token Passing Ring LANs in chapter 6.In the second half of the book, the changes include: coverage of ATM technology applications to LANs in the new chapter 7; description of the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard in the new chapter 8; coverage of the use of the Fibre Channel standard for SANs in the new chapter 9; discussion of business drivers for internetworking in chapter 10; detailed descriptions of basic network management functions in the new chapter 11; and coverage of firewalls and VPNs in the new chapter 12. There are numerous examples within the text. There are also more than 200 homework exercises, 90 percent of which are new. Many of these exercises are based on the use of web resources.
