Ahmad Riza Khan (1856-1921), the leader of the twentieth-century Barelwi movement, was a scholar of Islamic law and a Sufi mystic in British India. His vision of what it meant to be a good Muslim was built on devotion to the Prophet Muhammad and to following the prophetic sunna as be interpreted it. The Barelwi movement continues to attract a large following both in South Asia and wherever South Asian Muslims have migrated, particularly in Britain. This book examines the life and thought of Ahmad Riza Khan in the context of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century British Indian history, and assesses his impact on contemporary reformist Muslim movements. Accessible vet authoritative, it features a glossary, chronology and guide to further reading, and will prove anindispensable resource for readers of all backgrounds.
