This book contains articles dealing with discovery, structure elucidation, and elegant synthetic strategies developed for natural products, with an emphasis on the structure activity relationship of bioactive natural products. The contributions, made by some of the world's leading scientists in the field, should be of great interest to the readers. The topics are selected carefully since bioactive natural products are clinically useful pharmaceuticals or the primary compounds under extensive medicinal chemistry exploration. The book provides examples with updated research results which can spur graduate students' interests in bioactive natural products research. It also brings a historical perspective to the chemistry and biology of some selected bioactive compounds, a technique which could inform researchers about the process of developing pharmaceuticals, from discovery to application as drugs.
Author Biography
Xiao-tian Liang is currently the emeritus professor of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the editor-in-chief of Journal of Asian Natural Products Research, Chinese Chemical Letters, vice editor-in-chief of Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica, editorial board member of Sciences in China, Chinese Science Bulletin, Chinese Journal of Organic Chemistry, Huaxue Xuebao (Acta Chimica Sinica) and Planta Medica. He also served on the editorial board of Tetrahedron and Tetrahedron Letters. He was the recipient of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Awards, Heliang & Heli Awards in Chemistry and many other National Awards from Chinese government as a major contributor. His research interests include isolation, structure elucidation and synthesis of natural products, as well as application of novel NMR spectroscopic techniques to natural products. He coauthored more than 300 scientific papers and reviews, and wrote and edited more than 10 books. Wei-shuo Fang is currently an associate professor at Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College. His major research interests include isolation, structure modification and semi-synthesis of bioactive natural products, as well as applicationof biocatalysts in asymmetric synthesis. He coauthored more than 40 papers and reviews, contributed several book chapters to Studies on Chinese Medicinal Herbs with Modern Techniques and HPLC analysis and Principal Chinese Medicinal Herbs.
