This 3 volumes set describes the first excavation work that took place in the 5 winter seasons between 1922 and 1927. The excavation was carried out under the charge of John Marshall, then director general of archaeology in India. The first 2 volumes are the text of the excavations and the 3 volumes consist only of plates, diagrams, maps and plans. The first volume has 19 chapters and 14 plates, the chapters describe the country, climate, rivers, the excavations, the buildings, antiquities, art, religion, disposal of the dead, the extent of the Indus civilization, the age and authors of the Indus civilization, the various areas of the site, architecture and masonry, plain and painted pottery, figurines, and model animals.Volume 2 describes the faience and store vessles, seals, impressions, copper tablets, sign list of the early Indus script. It covers the Indus script, household objects, tools and implements, copper and bronze utensils, personal ornaments, games and toys, cowery shell, system of weights at Mohenjo daro, human remains, Zoological remains, minerals and metals. Volume 3 which is a voulme of only illustrations has 149 plates. The plates show the layout, the seals, the script, the pottery, the art, and other aspects of the civilisation. This book is a reprint of the 1931 edition.
