  • Description

Oliver Twist is a popular novel by English author Charles Dickens, and it narrates the story of a young orphan who is thrown into an unexpected setting, full of criminals and pickpockets. Set in England in the early 19th century, the book takes readers on Oliver’s journey, which begins at abrutal workhouse. The book then follows his apprenticeship with Mr. Sowerberry, an undertaker, and his subsequent escape to London. Once in London, he meets Jack Dawkins, also known as the ‘Artful Dodger’, and Charlie Bates, who initiate Oliver into a gang of young criminals led by Fagin, a miserly old man. Along the course of the book, Oliver encounters many other interesting characters – some cruel and some kind. Dickens has received much praise for his portrayal of criminals, their squalid lives, and the use of sarcasm and dark humour in this context. The book also throws light on the treatment of orphaned and homeless children during that era, and Dickens’ contempt for the Poor Laws. Born on February 7, 1812, Charles Dickens was one of the most celebrated English novelists of the Victorian period. Dickens started his career in writing by working as a journalist, and covered Britain’s political scenario for The Morning Chronicle. His popularity as a novelist grew after his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, was published in the year 1836. He is known for writing iconic pieces of literatuwhichre with iconic characters. Some of his other popular works are A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations. These books continue to be popular among readers, and have never gone out of print.
