ON PLOTINUS, like other titles in the Wadsworth Philosopher's Series, offers a concise, yet comprehensive, introduction to this philosopher's most important ideas. Presenting the most important insights of well over a hundred seminal philosophers in both the Eastern and Western traditions, the Wadsworth Philosophers Series contains volumes written by scholars noted for their excellence in teaching and for their well-versed comprehension of each featured philosopher's major works and contributions. These titles have proven valuable in a number of ways. Serving as standalone texts when tackling a philosophers' original sources or as helpful resources for focusing philosophy students' engagements with these philosopher's often conceptually daunting works, these titles have also gained extraordinary popularity with a lay readership and quite often serve as "refreshers" for philosophy instructors.
Author Biography
C. Wayne Mayhall is adjunct professor of philosophy at Bethel College and Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is the author of ON PLOTINUS (2003), ON CARNAP (2002), and ON BUBER (2003), in the Wadsworth Philosophers Series and ON LOGICAL POSITIVISM (2002), in the Wadsworth Philosophical Topics Series. As contributing editor, he recently collaborated with Gary L. Comstock of North Carolina State University on the 2nd edition of RELIGIOUS AUTOBIOGRAPHIES (Wadsworth, 2003). A former news writer for a New York Times syndicate and a professional writer for over two decades for such national magazines as READER'S DIGEST, NATIONAL WILDLIFE, MODERN MATURITY, AND MEN'S FITNESS, he decided a decade ago to combine two passions, humanities studies and writing, into an interdisciplinary pursuit to teach and publish in the fields of philosophy, sociology, and religion. In addition to rewriting chapters 1-3 and 8 for this 2nd edition of PATTERNS OF RELIGION, he is presently working on a biography on 18th century English man of letters and poet William Cowper, a made-for-television script based on the book Shantung Compound about the life of American theologian Langdon Gilkey, and the translation of several Greek classic works to modern English. His primary fields of study are the history of philosophy and religion with concentrations in existentialism and phenomenology and 17th and 18th century English and American Puritanism. He is most indebted to the companionship of his wife Laura Anne and the love of his children, Emily, Isaiah, Solomon and Clara.
