One Day is the bittersweet story of a couple who meet each other, proceed to fall in love, hide their true feelings from each other, and ultimately tie the knot and lead a happy life till fate parts them. The novel starts with the rendezvous of two young graduates, Emma and Dexter, on the day of their graduation. She is 22, and he is 23. They are both attracted to each other, but they don’t tell each other how they feel. In a bid to see how their lives will pan out individually, they decide to meet on the same day, July 15, every year, and promise to keep in touch. They part after teasing each other as to what they think the future holds for them. Emma is earnest and idealistic, while Dexter is more practical and dreams of a high flying life for himself. The novel then begins to trace the lives of these two characters over a period of twenty years. The author goes back to the two main characters on the same day each year - July 15. Every time they get in touch, the two tend to be in a new phase in their lives. Dexter becomes a successful TV presenter, while Emma drifts from one job to another, without any aim. She eventually becomes a waitress at a Mexican restaurant. Their paths cross several times, and they each go through many relationships. Although they always try to get together, random and unforeseen instances stop them from pursuing a relationship. Dexter soon develops a drinking problem and his life starts spiralling downwards. Emma, meanwhile, finds a teaching job and settles down. Dexter falls in love with another woman, marries her, and they have a daughter. His relationship does not last, though. Emma soon starts writing novels for young adults and becomes quite successful. The story traces what happens next with Emma and Dexter, and paints a picture of the dynamics of their relationship through the years. Their love for each other and how it all plays out forms the crux of the story. About The Author David Nicholls is a British screenwriter and novelist.
