  • Description

This book has primarily been written keeping in view the needs and interests of B.Sc. (Pass), B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. (Part I) students of Indian Universities. It has broadly been divided into three sections, viz. FUNDAMENTALS, CORE COURSE and SPECIAL TOPICS. Basic concepts have been introduced at an early stage so that their importance can be better appreciated when they are applied in the chapters that follow. The subject matter of the first four chapters has subsequently been applied in almost every chapter. The chapter sequence in the Core Course (Chapters 5-22) has been planned bearing in mind that the reactivities of organic functional groups follow some general principles. Accordingly, the compounds have been arranged in the order of functional groups without making the traditional distinction between aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Spectral characteristics of almost all classes of compounds have been discussed. In addition, the mechanisms of most of the reactions have been discussed in a simple and lucid style. The third section on Special Topics (Chapters 23-24) of the book contains a detailed account of the topics of current interest such as Synthetic Polymers, Organic Chemistry of Life, Organic Photochemistry and Pericyclic Reactions. About 1000 drill questions and problems are included in the book to provide sufficient breadth to appreciate the aim with which the book has been written. Solutions to Selected Problems are provided.About the AuthorS.P. Singh, Professor Emeritus, Kurukshetra University obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Lucknow in 1964. He has been teaching in Kurukshetra University since 1965 and has served as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1989-1992. He has published more than 150 research papers in different areas of Organic Chemistry. Prof. Singh was also associated with the University of Illinois at Chicago as post-doctor fellow (1968-70), Senior Fullbright Scholar (1979-1980) and visiting Research Professor (1989). During his several trips to Universities in Europe, he has established professional collaboration with many leading scientists. Prof. Singh was elected as the General Secretary (outstn) of the Indian Science Congress Association (2004-2007). Among many awards received by Prof. Singh are Acharya P.C. Ray Memorial Medal (1994) and Lifetime Achievement Award of the Indian Chemical Society (2003). As Nodal person of the U.G.C. Curriculum Development Committee in chemistry, Prof. Singh has led a team of eminent chemists to draft the model syllabus for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 2001. Before that he was the Convener of the U.G.C. Panel in Chemistry (1997-2000). R.P. Kapoor, Professor Emeritus and Coordinator, Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy, Yamuna Nagar got his Ph.D. degree from Agra University, Agra in 1963. After a brief stint of teaching at Agra College, Agra (1963-1964) he joined the faculty as Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra in 1964 where he worked till 1997. He was Chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1993-1996. In 1997 he joined Guru Nanak Khalsa Postgraduate College, Yamuna Nagar as Visiting Professor to establish a new centre of M.Sc. Industrial Chemistry (Pharmaceuticals), where he worked till 2005. He has published more than 70 research papers covering various aspects of Organic Chemistry, i.e., reaction mechanism, medicinal chemistry, and synthetic organic chemistry in national and international journals.Table of Contents Organometallic Compounds Alcohols Phenols Ethers Aldehydes and Ketones Carboxylic Acids Substituted Acids Acyl Derivatives Organic Compounds of Nitrogen Organophosphorus Compounds Organosulphur Compounds Organic Synthesis via Enolates Solutions
