In this book, Anatole France makes use of a short sighted monk, to release the pent up agony of the human race. The monk sails to an island; his poor eyesight has him baptising a flock of penguins rather than human beings. Having been baptised, the penguins take on human traits like building civilisations, going to war and all the other witty ironies that have been overshadowing humankind since time immemorial. France spares no one in this allegorical satire about the rise and fall of the penguin empire by poking fun at every political movement known to man. As a grand parody of human civilisation and a tour de force of world literature, Penguin Island, allots vanity a demeaning appeal.
Author Biography
The most popular French writer at the turn of the century, François-Anatole Thibault known to the world as Anatole France was born to a bookseller in Paris and spent most of his life around books. His father called his bookshop the 'Librarie de France' – from this the future writer took his famous surname. France made his breakthrough with The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard and went on to create a huge body of work as a poet, journalist, and novelist, combining classical finesse with sharp flashes of irony. The Roman Catholic Church listed his works on the Prohibited Books Index which he regarded as a ‘distinction’. He was a member of the Académie française, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature “in recognition of his brilliant literary achievements, characterised as they are by a nobility of style, a profound human sympathy, grace, and a true Gallic temperament".
