The English-language skills acquired at school level often determine children’s future academic success and effectiveness in social interaction. With a comprehensive learning package of language skills, Real English trains school learners to use English confidently for academic purposes and real-life communication. Main features of the series are: Engaging text: a rich selection of stories, folktales, anecdotes, biographies, episodes of history, real stories, factual writing, plays, poems and rhymes Core skills: Reading and comprehension – factual, inferential, reflective and evaluative Vocabulary – contextual, thematic and general Grammar and usage Identification of sounds and pronunciation Listening and speaking Writing – functional and creative Purposive organization: well-graded, cross-referenced and contextually organized practice tasks; space for written responses Colourful illustrations: imaginative, intriguing and attractive pictures to accompany text; contemporary layout The pedagogic approach in Real English was formulated after long and close research on learning situations inside and outside the classroom to help learners achieve both functional knowledge of the English language and a theoretical understanding of its structures. The lessons incorporate core value elements like national identity, tolerance, women’s empowerment, ethical conduct and protection of the environment, drawing upon the National Curriculum Framework of 2005. The Real English package consists of Coursebooks 1-8, Read and Enjoy Supplementary Readers (included in the coursebooks for classes 1-5 and provided separately for classes 6-8), Workbooks 1-8, audio CDs (available separately on request), Teacher’s Guides and the Viva Online Learning Real English website.

K.E. Sunil completed his M.A. in English and M.Phil. in English Language Teaching from the central Institue of English and foreign Languages (now English and Foreign Languages University), Hyderabad, and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Morpho-Phonemics at the University of Dravidian Linguistics. His has offered a course in academic writing for the International Training Programme at the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages and has worked on the Multi-Lingual dictionary Project at the Regional Institute of English, Bengaluru.
