Although a few books dealing with some specialised aspects of regioanl planning have appeared in India, there has been no systematic treatment of the subject from the teaching angle, embracing the whole field of regional planning, drawing attention to the work done by Indian scholars and focusing on Indian problems. The present book is and attempt in this direction. Since the book was sponsored by the University Grants Commission under its “Preparation of university Level Books by Indian Authors” scheme, the style adopted is simple, lucid and direct. The 12 chapters of the book, besides dealing with the concepts, lucid and direct. The 12 chapters of the book, besides dealing with the concepts, methods and techniques of regional planning, have been devoted to specific problems in regional development such as regional imbalances and inequalities, the process of urbanisation, rural development, backward area development and tribal development. This provides the necessary orientation to the directions in which regional planning is relevant. The authors present the book with hope and confidence to the students and teachers of economics, geography and regional planning. The book may also serve a useful purpose to the regional and economic planners.

Mahesh Chand (born 1918) joined Allahabad University in 1942 as lecturer and Lucknow University in 1956 as Reader in Econometrics. After his short stay at Lucknow, he came back to Allahabad University from where he retired as Professor/ Head in Economics Department in 1980. He has contributes a number of papers in Prestigious journals and has written a number of books in English and Hindi mainly in Joint authorship. He was also a member of the Panel of Economists (Agriculture) of the Planning Commission. Vinay Kumar Puri (born 1950) topped in B.A. Examination (1969) and M.A. Economics examination (1971) of Allahabad University winning gold medals. He joined Allahabad University in 1971 as lecturer before shifting over to Shyam Lal College, Dlehi University, in 1973. He has written books and articles both in Hindi and English. His articles have also appeared in Indian Journal of Economics, University of Allahabad Studies, and Yojana. His Publications in Hindi include translations of some important works in Economics.
