  • Description

This is perhaps for the first time that the most secret documents available in Windsor Castle, London, are being made available to scholars and the public. So far these records were not accessible to historians and were preserved meticulously in the royal archives. They contain the correspondence between the sovereign and his representative, the Governor-General or the Viceroy, so far as India is concerned and deal with almost all important matters which might be of interest to the head of the state in the United Kingdom. They throw light on the political, economic, Cultural and social affairs of the dominion under British suzerainty during the 19th and 20th centuries. They reveal the keen interest the sovereign took in the affairs of the Country and many a time gave his consent and advice to the Viceroy to deal with a particular situation. The King himself kept abreast not only with the Political trends in India but made personal acquaintances with the rulers of princely. States to some of whom he gave audience when they visited London and stressed upon them the necessity of introducing schemes for the welfare of their states. The Viceroy as representative of their majesties, directly corresponded with Queen Victoria and her successors and sought orders on many crucial matters. These documents are an invaluable source of information for researchers, scholars and even general readers. The present volume comprising 213 select documents cover the period from 1860 immediately after the "Great Revolt of 1857" to 1935 just before provincial autonomy was granted to India. It was not possible to go through the documents of subsequent period due to Technical reasons and, therefore, we had to confine ourselves to this particular period. We hope to cover the subsequent period in the next revised edition.
