The book is written for the benefits of the student and teachers of the Indian Universities including both the science and engineering streams, it deals in details various functions like the Bessel functions, Legendre's polynomials, Hermite functions, Hypergeometric functions, etc. Each chapter starts with definition, of special functions, their properties like recuration relations, Orthogonal properties. There are illustrative examples worked out in details along with a few unsolved examples. There is a chapter of Riccati's equation. There is a separate chapter on orthogonal set of functions including Strum-Liouvill problem involving eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. In introductory knowledge of elementary calculusand complex analysis is advisable is understanding some chapters. Suggestions and critical observations about the book are most welcome.
Author Biography
P.K. Mittal, M.Sc. (Maths, Physics), Ph.D., was the Head of the Department of Mathematics at Pt. L.M.S. Government P.G. College, Rishikesh. He was teaching postgraduate and undergraduate students for more than 26 years. He was also guiding research in applied mathematics and has produced 11 Ph.Ds. He was editor of SCM Journal of Mathematical Sciences and the executive editor of Indian Journal of National Sciences. He was also on the Editorial Board of Acta Ciencia Indica. He had to his credit more than 50 research papers and several books. Jai Dev Anand was teaching in the Department of Physics and Astrophysics for more than thirty years. During those years, he had been teaching courses both at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level ranging from Mathematical Physics, Mechanics, Classical Electrodynamics, Quantum Field Theory and Particle Physics, etc. In the early stages of his career, he took classes for undergraduate students in B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics. The author himself was an undergraduate and then a graduate student of Delhi University. In 1966, he got Ph.D. Degree in Theoretical Physics. From time to time, he has been attending national and international seminars and conferences on high energy Physics and Astrophysics. During the last couple of years, he has been actively working in models of Neutron stars and Neutrino astrophysics.
