This is the first text to view building construction and its systems through the lens of sustainability, providing an integrated approach to the principles of sustainable design as the way a building is created as opposed to an added topic appended to traditional construction information. As a practicing architect and interior designer, Tucker covers ALL systems including construction systems, mechanical systems, electrical and plumbing systems, and interior systems for the first time in a single text. The technical knowledge and vocabulary presented here allow interior designers and architects to communicate more effectively amongst themselves as well as with engineers and contractors while collaborating on projects, leading to more accurate solutions for problems related to a broad range of other building considerations with an impact on interior design.

Lisa M. Tucker, PhD, LEED AP BD+ C, AIA, ASID, CID, IDEC, is an Associate Professor of Interior Design in the School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) where she serves as the Graduate Program Coordinator for Interior Design and teaches courses on lighting, building systems, and upper level design studios. She is a practicing interior designer and architect with a BS in Architecture, Masters of Architectural History, a Certificate of Historic Preservation from the University of Virginia and a PhD in Architectural Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Tucker was honored by Design Intelligence as one of the Most Admired Design Educators in 2010 and has won multiple teaching awards. She is an active member of both the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) and in 2012 will assume the position of IDEC President.
