The Aksaratantra is one of the Pratisakhyas of the Samaveda, which belongs to its Kauthuma recension and is, in fact, a part of the Samatantra (Prapathaka-s XIV and XV), composed by Audavarji. It is also called because it deals with Aksara or stobha, a syllable or a set of syllables added to a rc (Yonimantra) which forms the basis of the chanting of saman-s (Samagana). A critical edition of the Aksaratantra has been a long desideratum. It is largely fulfilled by the present edition prepared by Dr. Sharma, a serious student of Sanskrit grammar, who has scientifically reconstructed the text on the basis of the available manuscripts and printed versions, with variants listed in the footnotes. The text is accompanied by an exhaustive Introduction, which dilates upon the nature of the Aksaratantra and acquaints the reader with the musical notes (svara-s) in the chanting of saman-s as well as with the Pratisakhyas of the Samaveda with a detailed account of the Aksaratantra and its commentary.About the AuthorDr. Shri Krishna Sharma, the editor of this rare treatise, is working as a Professor in the Institute of Sanskrit & Indological Studies, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra.
