This volume, originally written in French, is a collection of his essays and addresses in various serial and periodical publications.9 essays comprise of this book, they are: The beginnings of Buddhist art, (first published in the "Journal Asiatique", 1911); The representations of Jatakas on the bas-reliefs of Barhut, (lecture at the Musee Guimet, 1908); Eastern Gate of the Sanchi Stupa, Checture at the Musee Guimet, 1910; Greek origin of the image of Buddha, (lecture at the Musee Guimet); The tulelary pair in Gaul and in India, ("Revue archaeologique", 1912); The Great Miracle at Cravasti, ("Journal Asaitique", 1909); The six tusked elephant (Extract from "Melanges Sylvain Levi", 1911); Buddhist art in Java (Extract from the "Bulletin de L'ecole Francais d' extreme orient", 1909); and, Buddhist Maddona (Extract from monuments et memoirs publies par 1'academie des Inscription et belle letters, 1910). The book has 50 plates and was first published in 1917. It was translated by L.A. Thomas/F.W. Thomas(1867-1956).
