McCahill did his undergraduate and graduate work at Harvard University where he received his Ph.D. in 1970. After six years at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, he taught history and held a variety of administrative posts at Brooks School. He has published an earlier book on the House of Lords and a number of articles.
