For many years the historiography of the "Sepoy Mutiny", as it was called, was based on records, diaries, letters, etc., which were written in English and naturally expressed the English point of view. Scant attention was paid to sources on Indian languages which often gave an entirely different slant on the events of 1857. The Indian Literature of the Great Rebellion brings together Indian language sources for the Revolt of 1857.

HENRY SCHOLBERG is a native of India and spent two-thirds of his childhood in Darjeeling. Before retiring from the University of Minnesota he served for twenty years as curator of the Ames Library of South Asia. He has written books on bibliography, history besides writing poetry and fiction.
