This book studies Bengali and English language criticism of Bengali literature in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author has selected three journals from the hundreds that appeared between 1870 and 1900. She has attempted to show how the critics who published in them drew upon cultural and historical discourse of the time in order to free the emerging literature from a colonial paradigm. She seeks to establish the need for studying the contemporary criticism that surrounds and supports the literary work, as well as the work itself.
