This is a collection of papers on the use of technologies for teaching and learning. There is a wide range of learning technologies: audio-based, video-based and computer-based, with or without real-time interaction. The chapters are based on the experiential reflection and research by the author over a period of 14 years. The book provides insights into the use of learning technologies, and the associated problems of planning, designing, development and delivery of teaching and learning using technology. Understanding Learning Technologies explores the following technologies and reflects on the following issues: Audio, Radio and Interactive Radio Interactive Television Satellite Technology Web-based Learning/Online Learning/e-Learning Open Source Software Assistive Technologies Design and development of Interactive Learning Environments Interaction and Interactivity Competencies of Web-based Instructional Designers ICT and Cultural Diversity School Networking WWW as a Reference Source. Every chapter critically examines the problems and provides suggestions, recommendations and guidelines for effective use of learning technologies. Learning technologies include the notion of the use of tools, knowledge and their social effects in a broader sense. The application of technology for the enhancement of teaching, learning and assessment. This book uses the term "Learning Technology" to cover all technologies that support and help students to learn in classroom and/or at a distance. Thus, learning technologies cover the use of printed text, audio-cassette, radio, video-cassette, broadcast TV, teleconference, satellite, computers, multimedia, the internet, etc. In this book, there are sixteen chapters covering some of the learning technologies, though readers will find more of the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW) applications in teaching and learning.
Author Biography
Sanjaya Mishra holds a PhD in Library and Information Science in the area of library networks. He has been a teacher of communication technology to distance educators and involved in successful implementation of many multimedia and Internet-based courses. With professional training in distance education, television production and multimedia, he is actively involved in collaboration at international level. At present, he is Reader in Distance Education at the Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education, Indira Gandhi National OpenUniversity, New Delhi. He also served (2001-2003) the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia at New Delhi as a Programme Officer, where he conducted a number of workshops on ‘Multimedia’ and ‘e-learning’ in the Asian region. He has served as consultant to UNESCO, UN-ESCAP, World Bank and the Commonwealth of Learning. He is one of the founder editors of the Asian Journal of Distance Education. He co-edited two IGI Global, USA, publications entitled Interactive Multimedia in Education and Training (2005) and Cases on Global E-Learning Practices : Successes and Pitfalls (2007). Dr. Mishra is a qualified trainer, known for his unconventional approach to training, and specializes in the use of Learning Technologies.
