This book seeks to examine Vinoba's political views regarding 'swaraj' (self-rule) within the context of his Advaita Vedantan religious framework. Building upon an improved undeerstanding of 'swaraj,' the analysis proceeds to show how Vinoba came to assert the proposition that representative democracy stifles the development of each person as a spiritual being. What amounts to a religious critique of representative democracy is then evaluated with a view to determining the consistency with which Vinoba's perscriptions for political action or inaction reflect his 'swaraj' perspectives.

MICHAEL SONNFEITNER taught Political Science at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Born in Kansas in 1949, Dr. Sonnleitner received a B.A. degree from Whitman College (1971) and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota (1979). Michael is the author of several other publications which reflect his scholarly interests in theories of violence and non-violence. His research has led to travel experiences throughout South Asia as well as to South Africa, Northern Ireland, and Mexico. Michael is married and enjoys his family, vegetarian cooking, and working to build a more just world order thorugh nonviolent direct action.
