Description
Yuganta - The End Of An Epoch is a reinterpretation of India’s largest epic, the Mahabharata. In this book, Irawati Karve goes into most of the major events in the epic and gives them a socio-political interpretation, without the religious context, which generally predominates interpretations of the Mahabharata. Irawati Karve writes on the presumption that the Mahabharata is an account of a family, a dynasty that really existed and a fratricidal conflict that actually happened, 3000 years ago. She views Mahabharata not as a myth, but as the history of a dynasty that ruled India for a long time. She puts stories and events in the context of the social and political situation of those times. The author gives a different interpretation of characters like Bheeshma and Karna. It focuses on just a few personalities from the Mahabharata, and presents a different viewpoint on their characters and motivations. Yuganta was originally written in Marathi. This book is an interesting read for those who are interested in the history of India. Its pragmatic interpretation of a religious epic gives new insights into the political and social history of the country. The author received a Sahitya Akademi Award for this book. About The Author Irawati Karve is an educationist, writer, and anthropologist. She has written books on many topics, in both Marathi and English. Some of her other books include Hindu Society - an interpretation, Maharashtra - Land and People, and Kinship Organization in India. Karve obtained a master’s degree in sociology from Mumbai University and a doctorate in anthropology from Berlin University. She was also the head of the department of sociology and anthropology in Deccan College for many years.
