Combining theoretical knowledge and practical applications, this advanced-level textbook covers the most important aspects of contemporary digital communication systems. It focuses on the rules of functioning digital communication system blocks, starting with the performance limits set bythe information theory. Drawing on information relating to turbo codes and LDPC codes, the text presents the basic methods of error correction and detection, followed by baseband transmission methods, and single- and multi-carrier digital modulations. The basic properties of several physical communication channels used in digital communication systems are explained, showing the transmission and reception methods on channels suffering from inter symbol interference. The text also describes the most recent developments in the transmission techniques specific to wireless communications used both in wire line and wireless systems. The case studies are a unique feature of this book, illustrating elements of the theory developed in each chapter. It provides a concise approach to digital communications, with practical examples and problems to supplement the text. About the Author Krzysztof Wesolowski is a Full Professor and Head of Wireless Communications Division in the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications at Poznan University of Technology, Poland, where he gained an M. Sc. in Electrical Engineering (1976) and Ph.D. in Communications (1982). He also has an M.A. in Mathematics (cum Laude), which he achieved in 1977, from the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan. Prof. Wesolowski completed his Habilitation in Communications in 1989, also at Poznan University of Technology and was awarded thetitle of the Professor in Technical Sciences in 1999 by the President of Republic of Poland.
