Description
The main aim of this book is to provide a critical introduction to the leading positions in leisure theory and to guide the reader through their strengths and weaknesses from a feminist perspective. The book is written to draw attention to the various leisure experiences that women encounter and construct in their everyday lives and the meanings that these experiences have for them. In contrast to most other feminist approaches, the book incorporates insights from poststructuralism. The predominantly male theories of the 1970s and the first wave of feminist reactions to them are examined from a perspective which takes into account such poststructuralist ideas as: multiple subjectivities of women and multiple femininities; the possibilities of resistance to male dominance in leisure; possibilities through leisure of re-writing masculine and feminin scripts; and leisure as a site of struggle where hegemonic masculinity can be challenged.Wide-ranging and challenging, the book offers a host of new insights into how leisure theory has handled the question of gender difference and inequality. The book is written by an experienced teacher who is sympathetic to the needs of undergraduates who sometimes find theory daunting and perplexing.
