Plants from the genera Urtica, often better known as the stinging nettle, can be distinguished by their stinging hairs, and in some species, their serrated leaf edges. Dr. Gulsel Kavalali is a pharmacist. She has a PH. D. from the University of Istanbul, Turkey. She has done her postdoctoral studies at Purdue University before returning to the University of Istanbul as a lecturer. She is currently a Professor in the Corrahpasa Faculty of Medicine and the Director of the Herbal Medicine Research and Development Center at the University of Istanbul. Professor Kavalali became Vice President of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants section of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 2002.
