Newman and Newman take a chronological approach to the study of the life span, drawing on the psychosocial theory of Erik Erikson to provide a conceptual framework for the text. Newman and Newman address physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth in all life stages, focusing on the idea that development results from the interdependence of these areas at every stage, and placing special emphasis on optimal development through life. Key Feature The authors’ organizing conceptual framework of psychosocial theory highlights the continuous interaction and integration of individual competencies with the demands and resources of culture. Psychosocial theory attempts to explain human development across the life span, especially patterned change in ego development, which is reflected in self-understanding, social relationships, and worldview. The 11 stages of development emerge in an ordered sequence. Development tasks are dictated by the interaction of the biological, psychological, and societal systems during each stage. A normal crisis arises at each stage, and a central process operates to resolve it. The resolution determines one’s coping resources (positive resolution contributes to ego strength; negative resolution contributes to core pathologies). The case studies appearing throughout every chapter distinguish this text from others. The authors integrate the case approach in the new edition by linking case examples with critical-thinking questions. The book has a strong multicultural perspective, interwoven throughout the text. The multicultural aspect of the text is a result of the psychosocial point of view in which the social-cultural context of development is fundamental to the process of development. Two chapters are devoted to the theories of development: one focuses on the major theorists, such as Piaget and Vygotsky, and a second chapter is devoted to the psychosocial theories of Erikson and Havighurst that are used in the rest of the book. Every chapter in Newman and Newman’s text helps to guide student study. Each chapter includes a chapter-opening outline and brief list of objectives; an integrated case study with accompanying analysis and critical-thinking questions; an end-of chapter Applied Topic, Summary, Questions for Further Reflection, and specific references to the free, optional "Life-Span Development: A Case Book." New to this Edition New research findings and recent census data have been integrated into the narrative New research on brain development and plasticity at all stages of life is incorporated.
