He was chief executive of Coats Viyella between 1991and 1996; before that, finance director and deputy group chief executive of Cadbury Schweppes.Between 1997 and 2007, he was a non-executive director at Scottish & Newcastle, where he also chaired the audit committee. He has also been non-executive chairman of Royal Mail, SHL Group and Hogg Robinson. He currently sits on the board of Biocon, the Indian Biotechnology company, and Provexis, a UK functional food company.A qualified chartered accountant, he has a double bachelor degree in accounting and economics and a doctorate form Otago University. The Effective Director is his fourth book.
